The Lithonia Post Office at 3035 Stone Mountain Street abruptly closed on Saturday, May 16, 2026 — with no warning to residents or city officials.

A handwritten note on the door offered the only explanation: "We are now closed due to lack of staff."

City Councilmember Darold Honore called the closure shocking, noting that no one from USPS contacted city leadership beforehand.

He expressed immediate concern for elderly residents who depend on the facility.

The closure reflects a deepening national crisis within the postal service.

Postmaster General David Steiner warned Congress in March that USPS could run out of funds within twelve months.

The post office carries deep community significance — it is named after Army Specialist Jamaal Rashard Addison, the first Georgia soldier killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Whether the closure is temporary remains officially unknown, as no reopening date has been posted.

Stonecrest, Georgia — More than 30 sales representatives at a Pepsi-Cola distribution facility in Stonecrest have voted to join Teamsters Local 528, capping a hard-fought organizing campaign centered on fair wages, workplace protections, and dignity on the job.

The victory is being called a milestone for Georgia's growing labor movement — and part of a larger wave of union wins at Pepsi facilities statewide.

The road wasn't easy. After workers publicly pushed for unionization, management requested nearly a year to self-correct — an offer the workers flatly rejected.

For Alfred Kitchens, a 29-year employee at the facility, the win was deeply personal. "We couldn't put our trust in the company," he said, "so we came together as a team."

Local 528 now looks ahead to negotiating a first contract — one these workers say will reflect the years of dedication they've invested.
