The Lithonia Post Office at 3035 Stone Mountain Street abruptly closed on Saturday, May 16, 2026 β with no warning to residents or city officials.
A handwritten note on the door offered the only explanation: "We are now closed due to lack of staff."
City Councilmember Darold Honore called the closure shocking, noting that no one from USPS contacted city leadership beforehand.
He expressed immediate concern for elderly residents who depend on the facility.
The closure reflects a deepening national crisis within the postal service.
Postmaster General David Steiner warned Congress in March that USPS could run out of funds within twelve months.
The post office carries deep community significance β it is named after Army Specialist Jamaal Rashard Addison, the first Georgia soldier killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Whether the closure is temporary remains officially unknown, as no reopening date has been posted.
